June 2017 – EMC Innovation Lab reached another important milestone in the field of sustainability: a concentrated cleansers environmental sustainability assessment through a cradle-to-gate life cycle analysis (LCA) for the products of the Italian company Cle.pr.in. s.r.l.
Cle.pr.in. s.r.l. is a company working in the field of chemical synthesis of multipurpose detergents. Thanks to a collaboration with the University of Salerno, they have developed an innovative and super concentrate pre-measured packets for floor cleaning and daily maintenance.
Therefore, in order to assess the environmental performances of such products and to identify potential improvements, EMC Innovation Lab has performed a LCA analysis in accordance with UNI EN ISO 14040:2006 and UNI EN ISO 14044:2006.
Scores for the innovative product were compared with those achieved by a traditional detergent. The results show that the concentrated product implies a resources usage (both renewable and non-renewable) lower than -92% and a reduction of the carbon footprint estimated around -94%.
The main benefits are concentrated in the lower amount of chemical substances used in the formulation, in the minimization of the energy usage during the manufacturing process (-5400kWh per year) and in the sensible reduction of the transportation to the final users (-97 round trip journeys). The results of the study are then summarized in a promotional video sponsored by Cle.pr.in. s.r.l., visible at this address.
Thanks to its multi-year experience in the application of the LCA analysis to several case studies, EMC team is able to support companies and public administration in the development of sustainability evaluations of products and production processes at both laboratory and industrial scale.
